Circle A with janyak (Armenian needlelace) trim illustration
The circle A stands for anarchism (անարխիզմ), the “beautiful idea” where all are free and liberated from states, hierarchies and all forms of coercive power. “Is it possible?” is a hypothetical question that we will not know until we reach that day. “Is it worth striving for?” is an ethical question. For everyone who strives for collective liberation, then the answer is yes, and we believe we have a responsibility to work towards that day.
The janyak pattern, in the tradition that I learned, is called shourchbar (circle dance) that for me symbolizes the collective whole of our struggle – standing shoulder to shoulder, arm in arm, feet grounded to the earth and eyes set towards that beautiful idea on the horizon.
“By anarchist spirit I mean that deeply human sentiment, which aims at the good of all, freedom and justice for all, solidarity and love among the people; which is not an exclusive characteristic only of self-declared anarchists, but inspires all people who have a generous heart and an open mind.”
Errico Malatesta
