This piece was commissioned by the Earth First! Journal for their 40th Anniversary issue, created in memory and honor of all those that lost their lives in defense of the Earth.

A guardian stands over a fallen sibling holding the symbolic tools of EF! – the monkey wrench and the stone hammer. At their feet is a wolf that has passed on, shot to death. Around this apex predator the flora that relies on the wolf’s part in the ecosystem are blooming. A reminder of life continued and what we fight for. Above the guardian stands tall the drying heads of poppies, also at the end of their cycle, soon to break open and spread their seeds onto the soil below. Poppies are a symbol of martyrdom and remembrance.
