“Hearts starve as well as bodies. Give us bread, but give us roses.”

I often witness, whether during man-made or natural disasters, that there are always people who come together to make bread for each other- autonomous groups feeding their people outside of governments, capitalism, or NGOs. Bread- a symbol of life, land, culture, community – from the soil, to our hands. But bread alone, an emblem of the necessities of physical existence, is not enough. All beings deserve to live, not simply exist. We are surrounded by a culture tending their individual, manicured rose gardens. Including the joy is resistance crowd who have all their needs met and want more, but aren’t concerned with giving up their rose gardens to grow wheat to feed the people. Let our roses and wheat be wild, attainable, but also rebellious and uncontrollable. Free from borders, empires and hierarchies. We demand dignity for all, and the struggle is eternal.
